Got my iPhone…

…so what enterprising soul is going to give me an ssh client?

iPhone FTL

Andi and I tried to get iPhones this morning…an exercise in futility.

For some reason, AT&T/Apple decided that 20 phones per AT&T store should be plenty. Jackasses.

Testing TextMate for Blogging

Supposedly I can use TextMate, which I use for most of my coding, for blogging. Let’s see how this goes.

Snowboarding

Andi got a job at Shawnee Mountain. This means I get to snowboard for free at a mountain that is actually on my way home from work, which rules. So, I went snowboarding today for the first time in several years. I kept meaning to go every year, but something always came up. Moving, moving again, out of work, have work but no time, life threatening car accident, etc. Anyways, I got up a mountain today, and here are the things I’ve concluded about me and snowboarding:

Stupid Mac Tricks

Today’s silly-ass trick? This page, that shows you what my laptop sees each time it wakes from sleep.

ZFS in OSX

According to World of Apple, the next release of OSX (Leopard) contains Sun’s ZFS. If you haven’t heard of ZFS, you should really check it out. Sun is calling it “The last word in file systems”, and they may be right. Maximum filesystem sizes in the zettabyte range, maximum file sizes in the exabyte range, built-in checksumming to guarantee filesystem integrity. Simple storage pools for creating filesystems without a separate volume manager. Self-healing. Blazingly fast. Dynamic striping. Automatic block size adjustment. Snapshots. It’s all there and then some. Think of it as being able to treat your local storage like an enterprise SAN. I’m pretty excited about this (if you can’t tell). I wonder if Apple will let me put my root filesystem on ZFS…

I quit smoking

The title really says it all. I’m on day 13 without a cigarette and I’m actually starting to feel better. I took the patch route, which really seems to have taken a lot of the edge off. The downside to the patch is that it gives you really vivid dreams, so I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in 2 weeks. In theory you can take the patch off before going to bed, but then you wake up cranky and REALLY craving a cigarette.

However, I still get irritated easily, but not as bad as going cold turkey. My wife is a saint for putting up with my mood swings.

Mac+VMware update

Well, apparently VMware has heard the cries of OSX users…sort of. VMware for OSX is in “Friends and Family” beta right now, and hopefully will see public consumption soon. The new product is called VMware Fusion and is apparently a cross between Player and Workstation. This does NOT make me happy. Honestly, I didn’t even care if I actually had virtualization for my mac, I just want a damn ESX client!

My 15 minutes of fame

This was pretty entertaining. I just ran down to the inconvenience store to pick up a sandwich and it was mobbed with about 15 German tourists. They walk right up to me as soon as I get out of the car and start saying things like, “Ooh, Audi. That is a very nice car. I didn’t know Americans drove Audis.” So, all of them just HAD to have their picture taken with “the American that drives a German car”. It was all I could do to not burst out laughing, but I stood there for 20 minutes while each of them had their picture taken with me and the TT.

Mac spoof adds

Holy crap funny! Just funny. Go see ‘em now! I especially like the networking one.
